A raaga for every mood, notes for every raaga
Well, am no great expert , but i guess i can put wat i feel , on this mostly anonyomous forum, without the fear of ridicule :) , Anyways, these are just my personal feelings on my friends , the raagas, Now .. what are raagas or a raag, ..( For kindergartners in the subject), A raag is a basic set of notes, which has a fixed feeling about it, and fixed notational groups. It is the basic tenet of Indian classical music, north or south.
So lets say a raag, is like a a colour/s , using which the artists creates beautiful pictures of music, it is upto him , how to use it, though a red remains a red, the way u use it and where u use it on the canvas, details out the way it creates feeling inside u.
So for even more details, can visit any site for beginners on the net for indian music.
Mind u indian music <> bollywood music, which is just a song, indian music is the classical music of india, north indian/ south indian/khyal/ dhrupad etc. vocal or instrumental.
anyways...so . . talking further about raagas.
There can be millions of permutations and combinations of the 12 notes (rather 22 , in indian music there are 22 shrutis - a shruti is a note, distinguishable to the ear. So as per common belief, the ear can properly distinguish, between 22 notes within a particular scale from start to end, that is from freq n to 2n.) that is more deep to understand, we will talk about it later..
The notes which are called as do , re , mi fa and so on.. in other parts are called as sa re ga ma pa dha ni in indian music.
Further there are 12 important ones, as sa , komal re (komal is bit on the lower side of freq of the normal note) and normal re or shudh= normal re, komal ga and shudh ga, shudh ma and tivra ma (tivra = of a bit higher freq than the normal note) , pa (alone), komal dha, shudha dha, komal ni and shuddha ni..
The full names fo the notes are very beautiful, may as well quote them , sa =shadja , re =rishabh, ga = gandhar, ma =madhyam, pa = pancham, dha = dhaivat, ni = nishad, and then sa comes again..
Well. .. have gone into notes rather than a raag, but its important to understand the atomicity of a note, to understand a raag. ok.. so..basically, the notes or group of notes sung/played in a particular way, form a raag.
Ex . Raag bhoopali or bhoop (also simillar to raag mohanam in south indian music)
it has 5 notes , while going up (the act of climbing the scale is called as aroha), and coming down (avaroha).
up = sa re ga pa dha sa, down = sa dha pa ga re sa.
all notes are plain in this shudh, no komal or tivra notes.
All raags have a couple of notes which are important for him, they are called as vadi and samvadi. for bhoop they are ga and dha, respectively,. which means while coloring the picture using bhoop, i will make liberal use of Ga and Dha.
Then there is something called as pakad, which means that group of notes taken in that particular way, is the signature of the raag and a raag will be immediately recognised by that..
When a raag is said to have particular notes as above, the other notes are not allowed in the picture, maybe a tint or shade somewhere, to be offbeat, but thats it,they are not supposed to be there, else they disturb the mood of the raag.
So apart from these technicalities, there are a lot of other technical things,. but the purpose of starting this was to put my vision of the raags, on how they appear to me, as friends as people rather than only a group of notes. With each and everyone distinct as people around us, and with his own thinking process, nature and behaviour. Also just like people , meeting them (listening/playing them) induces different feelings within me, Also they can change moods depending on a lot of stuff.
There are raags for time different times, of the day, some supposed to be in the dawn, some morning, some afternoon, some evening, night, midnight as well..
Then there are raags for seasons, for the rainy season, for summer, for spring, on occasion of festivals, , all this because they are supposed to induce the spirit of that moment in time or season on to you.
It does not mean that if u sing malhar ( a raag for the rainy season), it will start raining, instead, it can give you a feeling of the rain, if it rains, or it is already raining , then your sensitivity to feel the rain, and other asscociated feelings are heightened due to it. Giving you a bigger go at life. thats one opinion on the subject.
I guess am dragging it too long. may be more on the individuality of the raags , in further writes, as and when i get time. But cant help, i cant stop writing, it aint in my hands.. anyways..
more later....tc cya
